The project site is located in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, in the community of Wilelinor Estates in a stream valley, below Maryland Route 2, just south of Annapolis. The stream is the primary headwaters of the southern branch of Church Creek on the South River. The project area encompasses the stream valley flood plain from the tidal interface to the culvert under Maryland Route 2. Development of the uplands surrounding the site has contributed significant sediment to this system. Stormwater velocities and peak flow volumes have increased as a result of increased imperviousness in the watershed. Two earthen dams had been installed across the stream forming two in-stream ponds, which served to capture sediments and block fish passage. A 48” pipe discharged water from the lower pond into the stream channel and had caused excessive erosion, sedimentation and degradation. The goal of this project was to reestablish a stable stream profile and planform, and create capacity to convey peak discharges. This in turn enhanced water quality, aquatic habitat and ecological function. |
