Underwood & Associates designed and constructed this project at the Shipley's Choice Elementary School located in Millersville, MD. The project involved the conversion of a dry stormwater management pond into a sand seepage wetland with perennial flow. This project was designed and constructed to employ techniques to integrate stormwater management with the creation of a living classroom for the students. The project upgraded the schools storm drainage system to meet current stormwater management standards while integrating the natural landscape of the area using native and threatens species and revitalizing the historic natural landscape of the area. This project provide water quality benefits to Chartwell Branch on the Severn River by replacing a dry stormwater detention system consisting of a low flow channel to a meandering perennial stream, as well as restore a stand of threatened Atlantic White Cedar trees.
