The Homeport Farms Outfall site is an old farm that has been developed as residential housing. As part of the development, a stormwater management pond outlets into a dry swale. The original design called for collecting most of the stormwater in a 30” RCP and outletting it at the bottom of a steep slope. During large storms, the stormwater overflow would have outletted down a limestone riprap channel. Both the pipe and the channel would have outletted into the Wilelinor Estates Stream Restoration Project. The removal of stable forest on steep slopes associated with the installation of the 30” RCP has the potential for erosion. As a result, the sedimentation could be great and have detrimental effects on the receiving stream system. Also, the use of limestone above the restoration project would promote the invasion of undesirable plants in this natural system.
This project daylights the 30” RCP at the top of the slope and conveys all of the stormwater down the slope in a series of sandstone riprap weirs and riprap-lined pools. The dry swale was replaced with a wet swale. The objectives were to reduce overflow velocities, reduce water temperatures, and infiltrate some stormwater to benefit the receiving waters. |
