The Preserve at Severn Run, a residential development project in Gambrills, lies above the two forks of the Jabez Branch, the last remaining brook trout stream in Maryland's coastal plain. The trout stream, like many high quality wetlands, is reliant upon cold, clean, ex-filtrating groundwater, and is highly susceptible to stormwater-related degradation. As such, the regulatory agencies in charge of protecting the resource required that storm events, up to the 25-year storm be captured and infiltrated on-site. This was achieved by employing an open channel conveyance system with pools and riffle-weir grade controls, a regenerative design that results in a system of physical features, chemical processes, and biological mechanisms that can have dramatic positive spiraling biofeedback effects on the ecology of a drainage area.
